Hey, new puppy parents, you’re faced with a pretty interesting dilemma.
Your veterinarian and puppy healthcare staff will tell you that your fluffy little bundle needs to be protected from bugs and germs in the outside world until s/he’s had their full round of vaccines, including their first rabies. This means little Bobo doesn’t get his first taste of the world (except for the inside of a vet’s office!) until he’s 4 months old. That’s the equivalent of keeping a human child in confinement at home until they’re about 8 years old!
Your dog trainer/canine behavior consultant will tell you that your pup’s most critical learning time is that magic period between 6 and 16 weeks. During this time of his/her life, the pup’s brain and learning ability are most fluid, they learn more quickly than at any other time of their lives, and lessons learned during this time are most well-absorbed and become rock-solid behaviors through the rest of the dog’s life. Without a proper education during these early days, will your new pup have the ability to become all he can be academically?
Interesting choice, eh? Keep the babe away from the world to protect her physical health, missing some amazing learning/training opportunities. Or, sign up for puppy class to help your dog be all s/he can be academically, but risk exposure to some communicable disease or parasite.
BADDogsInc has something to keep everyone happy! Our new PuppyPrep School program brings you the benefits of all possible alternatives. In this course, the benefits of a great education come straight home to you, with all the best features of a good puppy class being conducted in and around your home. Any health risks to your dog are completely eliminated, and your little one will reap the benefits of great foundation training that will last you a lifetime. Lessons learned at this stage will make your pup a better family member, neighbor and friend. Early learning teachesyour puppy how to engage his own mind, and helps you eliminate the potential for such later-life problems as biting, jumping up, destructive chewing, barking, house-soiling, separation issues, and a whole lot more.
The 5-week course comes to you, and includes the following:
• One 2-hour in-home training visit. All your family members are welcome to participate in this session. We’ll go over house-training basics, including various confinement methods, helping you to set up your home environment to be most effective in this relatively short-term project. We also cover nutrition, play, exercise, safe handling, playful biting, traveling with your pet, what to expect as your pup grows, as well as any breed-specific traits and quirks you can expect. We also get started on basic behaviors such as sit and down. Puppy programs can be conducted with or without clicker training, at your option.
• Four 1-hour weekly sessions. We continue the education process by building your skills as a trainer and your pup’s skills as a well-socialized family member. By the time we’re done, your pup will know “sit”, “down”, “stay” and “come” using both hand signals and verbal cues. He’ll be walking nicely on a leash, and won’t jump up on you or strangers when greeting. Playful biting will be a thing of the past, and your furniture, rugs and other valuables will be free of puppy teeth marks. No pee stains on the carpet, either. Your dog will refrain from picking up contraband items on request, and drop articles from her mouth without a wrestling match. Best of all, you’ll have a happy friendly dog who enjoys the company of people and new experiences, a furry companion to take on all your life’s adventures.
Prep School graduates can supplement their education once they’re ready to venture out by attending supervised BADDogsInc puppy play groups, where they can acquire and hone their dog to dog skills. Puppy parents can spend some enjoyable social time with other committed puppy parents, sharing experiences and learning more about well-structured dog interactions.
